Emerger

I had a bit of a wander around the shore line for a couple of hours last night.Wasn't hoping for much, and thats what I got. That a couple of fish blew up on my fly was more than I had expected.

While going through some archived files, I came across a vid I shot several years back, but never posted. So. here it is now. Apparently made during the Cahill emergence of that year. I caught a lot of fish of nice fish using that fly.

A day or so ago............

I was out one night a couple of days ago. Was another Esten Lake standard..........from what I can recall at this point. A LOT of boats out on the water. More on that day than all other days in combination. Last long weekend of the year maybe.

I`m sure if you look back through my posts, you`ll have noticed a previous mention of weeds in 14` of water. Generally, I will only see the tops of a few of the plants. Full growth starts a couple feet below. On all the lakes I have fished up here, I have consistently found fish....good fish..........in this type of aquatic structure.

Topwater was again very productive, and a sink not so much. And yea, once again I was just flippin out the GFC.

I also went exploring for something new. Found some good water and will be back there soon I hope. It was a follow up on a tip for some dry-fly trout water on the Little White.

Also of note, when on Esten last, I noticed Hex`s on the surface for the first time. I know I have lost my box of hex`s in the move. May have to get the tying bench
and wrap up a few.

Hatch Charts.

I've noticed a fair amount of traffic comes this way via searches for hatch charts for both the Grand and Upper Credit Rivers. Lets talk about charts for a second.

First off, for those new to the sport, charts can only be so accurate. Bugs don't use a calendar. Probably the most accurate method would be phenology. Years like this, where spring weather conditions were accelerated, the bugs were too. Some years they get pushed back. What they are good for is giving you a general idea what should or could be on the water, and what should be coming up. The internet is also a good resource. Many shops have river reports online and will clue you in to the currently producing hatches. Blogs such as this one can also tell you what others are finding successful.............though, buyer beware..........anyone can write a blog. Some are excellent anglers. Others are not, like the hack who writes this blog. The well known fly fishing author John Gierach once said something along the lines of 'there are good anglers, and there are good writers. Seldom are they one in the same.'

Of course, the easiest way to find out what the fish and the bugs are doing is to get out there and look.
